With so many great resources, the web is an excellent place for education and inspiration.¬† When it comes to design, particularly web design, a lot can be gained by spending some time scouring design blogs. We’ve helped make the search process easier by bringing together some great web design resources all in one place.¬† Check out some of the great writers and teachers at these sites and hopefully you can learn a thing or two along the way.

Smashing Magazine

Let’s start with one of the best in the business.¬† Smashing Magazine releases high quality content aimed at web designers and developers.¬† Their showcases are far reaching and their resources are excellent.¬† Vitaly Friendman and Sven Lennartz have created the go-to place for web designers to learn and be inspired.

Webdesigner Depot

Webdesigner Depot has one of the most eye-catching and attractive web design blogs around.  But the design is only the beginning.  The folks at the Depot match plenty of free resources with great tutorials and insightful posts on all aspects of web design.

CSS Tricks

The tutorials are top-notch.  Chris Coyier offers up amazing screencast tutorials that many sites would charge big bucks for access to.  At CSS Tricks they are absolutely free.  There are also plenty of other great resources and even a very helpful code snippet section.

Recently purchased by the folks who run Smashing Magazine, Noupe provides another great mix of tutorials, insight, and resources.  Two thumbs way up!

A List Apart

Released in a magazine-like format, A List Apart releases articles that are rarely matched in their extensiveness.¬† Their articles are lengthy but packed full of informative content that you won’t find anywhere else. I’ve found this blog very educational and it has helped with insight into many web design issues over the years.¬† I still reference their Suckerfish Drop Down article from 2003 whenever I need a CSS-based drop down menu.¬† This is quality that will last!

Web Design Ledger

Another solid web design blog, Web Design Ledger offers high quality resources and great inspirational showcases. They even provide premium content files with quality that is worth the price.

Net Tuts +

Net Tuts is part of a great network of tutorial blogs ranging in all aspects of design and media.  An online leader in web tutorials, Net Tuts even offers tutorial contributors payment for high quality tutorials used on their site.  If you have 30 minutes, get your hands dirty in a few tutorials.

Sitepoint offers a vast array of blogs and resources for everything from Search Engine Marketing to Photoshop to Ruby on Rails.  They also publish excellent book on web design and are constantly expanding their scope.

Our 9th excellent web design blog is a nine itself.  Tutorial9 is a collective of teachers and experts in Photoshop and web design.  They offer many free resources, downloads, and of course, tutorials for anyone getting started in web design.

Well, that wraps up a look at just a few of the great web design resources around the web.¬† I hope you’ll support these great sites as you learn and explore web design.¬† If you know of other great resources for web design please leave me a message in the comment section.
