Earlier this week I wrote a post that cast a bit of positive light on the otherwise shunned idea of crowdsourcing and speculative work (read: One Good Thing About Crowdsourcing). I made the claim that it was okay for beginning designers to try their hand at such places as 99Designs and offered a few reasons why it could further their career.
After much deliberation – and a few swift kicks in the pants from my commenters – I felt it necessary to provide a follow up post that offers some alternatives to spec work for those just getting started in design. So I sat down and gathered up 99 ideas for ways designers could build their portfolio, gain some experience designing, and possibly make a few bucks. I can’t claim to have tried all of these ideas but I know there are many that work well. And if you can’t find something on this list to get your design motor running, maybe you’re in the wrong field.

What an interesting post! I’ll probably do some of the stuff mentioned on this post.

Melody´s last blog ..Understanding Color Meaning In Sexy Design
Nicely done Chris. I think no. 94 is interesting as I feel that the majority of ‘designers’ who use crowdsourcing sites have never been to college to study design because they think design is something they can ‘play’ at. I have added a comment along these lines on your original article (though it’s yet to appear) so apologies if I’m repeating myself, but to me, a lot of people like graphic design in the way that people like gardening, or DIY or knitting. If they have the tools to do it then what’s the problem?
Dedicating 3, 4 or more years to studying design, its technicalities and nuances, as well as studying great designers and design movements and developing an understanding and appreciation for design is vital. Having CS4 and being able to cobble together a ‘logo’ is not.
Like I say, I’ve already mentioned all this in your previous article so don’t want to over-egg the point. But if you study hard, are serious about design and, most importantly, are talented you should be more than fine.
Thanks for a good laugh!
Having enough work is (fortunately) not my problem right now, but should it ever become that way, this is the list I’ll refer to.

Great list of ideas, Chris
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!! Great work on this one and you had me cracking up from the get go!
This is actually a great list for me at this time in my life. Thanks.
Entertaining stuff Chis….some great ideas in there too!
While crowdsourcing is here to stay…it is not the place for anyone serious about design to build their portfolios.
As designers it is important for us to educate people outside of the industry why crowdsourcing is a bad idea.
IMO, there are far too many designers out there who just keep whining about it…and not helping.
Duane´s last blog ..Our Logo Design Process
I like your point about designers complaining and not helping. Consider this post one small step towards educating the world.

Awesome read! One thing, I think places like 99designs and Cullogo, etc. are good places for students or new comers to see just what is out there. It gives them a HELLO to the real world. Whether their designs are good or not, education is never a bad thing
LOL, good alternatives.

Great post Chris!
Marcell Purham´s last blog ..Create an astonishing soccer desktop wallpaper using photoshop
Thanks for the post! I’m definitely going to do some (if not most) of the things on this list. Very very very helpful.
I love this article. I am the founder of logobids.com, a crowdsourcing design site. I appreciate your perspective on this and think every idea here is great for designers that do not want to participate in a service like mine. I know its not for everyone….Now practicing #99. Great List!!!
Crowd sourcing rules! I’ve put some of the ideas you gathered into practice and they proved to be very useful thanks!
Its amazing to me how many ways you can go about investing your money. I’ve found for me that best solution is both risky and low risk stocks. I normally put about 1/2 my investments into low risk mutual funds that grow over time and the other half in high risk high gain stocks. I recently got into day trading and I discovered that software stock picks are the most reliable as they can automate a process that I cant do quickly enough. The guys over at stockmarketsoftwareblog.com have a great system. Be certain to check them out!
I wanted to say your is in my favorite blog list on |46, Cheers Kasey Brostoff

HELLO PEOPLE !
I am a victim of 99designs.com also.
My conclusion is that, there, on 99designs.com freelancers are badly ripped off of ideas for basically free !
Design companies held contests and they win their own contest also, so they get away with all the ideas and all they pay is a small fee to 99designs.com. Isn’t that sweet ?
Designers, spread the word and the naked truth about these things ant techniques and don’t let yourself fooled by this speculators. Design is a hard work, is creation is the cream of human being. This should and is in fact well paid, by clients and by nature itself. Stay away of 99designs.com ! and places like that.
Spread the word about this garbage also !
Nice post! 99 is the best
Hahaha, doodle in Moleskin notebook. That is pretty funny.
Great post! I will print this and paste it on my wall!
I hope you have a great day! Very good article, well written and very thought out. I am looking forward to reading more of your posts in the future.
Had fun reading the 99 ideas.
99 Designs should be called 99% Crap. The prices are low and attractive, but if you’re on a budget (e.g. $300 for a logo) there are much better alternatives than doing spec work with inexperienced “designers”.
I posted a project on http://www.orangeslyce.com once to get my logo designed. It’s all college student designers, so the cost is low like 99Designs/CrowdSpring but I was able to work with one girl over a week with several iterations (she was quite patient with me).
I’m all for supporting students starting their careers, and since they are looking to build their portfolios, they’ll bend over backwards for your design, and aren’t looking for a quick buck.
